Sing for Hope Students Celebrate Scotland Week With Song and Dance

News
April 13, 2016
VOn April 6th, ninth grade students from NEW VISIONS CHARTER SCHOOL FOR ADVANCED MATH AND SCIENCE II got a taste of Scotland right here in New York. In collaboration with our cultural partners from THE NATIONAL THEATRE OF SCOTLAND, our students celebrated Scotland Week with music, song, and Scottish Ceilidh dancing. Led by cast members from National Theatre’s hit show, THE STRANGE UNDOING OF PRUDENCIA HART, students explored the breadth of Scottish culture through different aspects of the production. The play centers on the character of Prudencia, an uptight academic who – inspired by Scottish border ballads and riotous, rhyming couplets – begins a dream-like journey of self-discovery. Cast members Annie Grace and Alasdair Macrae channeled Prudencia’s expressive adventures with the students, beginning with vocal warm-ups and theatre games before moving into traditional Scottish song and dance. The workshop was hosted by Sing for Hope’s academic partner, GLASGOW CALEDONIAN UNIVERSITY NEW YORK, in their expansive space in Lower Manhattan. By the end of the day, laughter and joy echoed through GCU’s central hall as everyone danced together in celebration. Thanks to this special Sing for Hope day with our National Theatre artist partners and our New Visions students, The Bronx and the Scottish Borderlands have never seemed closer.
