Broadway Star and Arts Activist Tituss Burgess

Tituss Burgess, whose impassioned “Sit down, you’re rockin’ the boat” raised the rafters at last year’s Tony Awards, is beloved on Broadway not just for his show-stealing performances in Jersey Boys, The Little Mermaid and Guys and Dolls, but also for his generosity of spirit. Despite an intense schedule that has included four hit shows in as many years, the Georgia native finds time each season to volunteer in the youth outreach programs of Sing for Hope and ASTEP. He has developed a particular closeness with the young students from The Bronx and South Westchester who study at Young at Arts, a Sing for Hope partner program since 2005, where for the past two years he has shared his wisdom and performances, together with music director Mary-Mitchell Campbell. In his characteristically enthusiastic way, Tituss has this to say about his arts activism in action.

What initially sparked your interest in humanitarian outreach through the arts?

I’ve always wanted to figure out a way to spread the word about the arts and how important it was in my development and in the development of our youth. When my best friend (and Sing for Hope Board Member) Mary-Mitchell Campbell founded ASTEP, I knew then it was the perfect chance to put my money where my mouth was! I have since traveled with her to India to participate in her amazing arts outreach work there, and I’ve also collaborated here in New York with Sing for Hope and the Young at Arts kids in The Bronx.

What particular causes inspire you?

I tend to migrate towards inner-city kids. Mainly kids of color. It’s important to me to try and redesign what is cool to participate in and what is not. Any chance I get to show them that Usher can burn up the charts and pack a Broadway house, I seize it!

Thanks to Joe’s vital guidance and support, Sing for Hope’s Pop-Up Pianos graced the parks and public spaces of the five boroughs in New York City’s largest and most beloved public art installation in 2010 and 2011.  At the conclusion of their two-week public residency, the pianos were donated to under-resourced schools, hospitals, and community organizations, enriching lives for years to come.

A uniquely inclusive project, Sing for Hope’s Pop-Up Pianos combine the participation of dozens of community organizations, the creativity of hundreds of artists and public school students, and the spirit of a one-of-a-kind city – New York – in all its many colors. We cannot think of a more fitting tribute to Joe.

May the annual return of Sing for Hope’s Pop-Up Pianos act as a reminder to us of Joe’s life and service, of his impact on our great city, and of the many lives he touched.

Sing for Hope’s Art U! program introduces under-resourced students to the arts, and to art as a tool for positive social change. Art U! has some great new volunteer opportunities coming up in the month of March.

• We are implementing a Visiting Artists Series at a partner elementary school in the Bronx. Every Friday, we will be bringing engaging, interactive performances to 50+ students, exposing them to a variety of artists and art forms.
• We are also seeking Visual Artists to volunteer at an after-school art club on Wednesdays for elementary school students, assisting the teacher and teaching students new skills and techniques for visual art.
• Ongoing volunteer opportunities in Art U! classrooms, are updated regularly on our website.

Sing for Hope’s Healing Arts program brings live performance to patients and caregivers in healthcare facilities. Healing Arts is expanding to offer more diverse volunteer opportunities beginning in February.

• We are expanding into new facilities. Increasing the reach of Sing for Hope’s presence in the New York City community. The first expansion is into United Cerebral Palsy of NYC (www.ucpnyc.org) beginning in February of 2012.

Plácido Domingo, legendary tenor and Sing for Hope board member, is passionate about Sing for Hope’s mission of bringing the uplifting power of art to communities in need. Recognized as one of the finest and most influential singing actors in the history of opera, Maestro Domingo’s statistics speak for themselves:

For Sing for Hope Co-Founding Directors Camille Zamora and Monica Yunus (both of whom have sung with Maestro Domingo at LA Opera and The Jordan Festival, respectively), the importance of his mentorship cannot be overstated.

“Having Maestro Domingo as one of our longest-term, most passionate board members means the world to the whole Sing for Hope team and continues to inform who we are as an organization,” says Camille. “His vote of confidence for Sing for Hope resonates far and wide, and, for a grassroots, artist-led organization, that means a lot.” Monica adds, “Maestro Domingo’s profound artistry, combined with his commitment to humanitarian outreach, embody the very essence of Sing for Hope.”

One of the opera world’s most exciting young sopranos, Beverly Sills Award winner Susanna Phillips thrills audiences this season as Musetta in La bohème at the Metropolitan Opera, the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor at Lyric Opera of Chicago and Minnesota Opera, Pamina in Die Zauberflöte at the Gran Teatro del Liceu, and the Countess in Le nozze di Figaro with Grand Théatre de Bordeaux.

Founded in the fall of 2006, the Camerata Notturna is New York City’s premier community chamber orchestra, with repertoire ranging from the Baroque period to the 21st century.

The Healing Arts Concert Series is a unique program designed to bring together the Mount Sinai community of patients, families, doctors and staff in a shared and uplifting experience.
